Keli Lane and the media circus that led to her conviction.

Here's a case whose outcome shook me to my core with fear and shock.

Keli Lane is a former Australian water-polo player who has been accused of murdering her 2 day old baby, Tegan.

Was the body of the baby found?
No.

So on what grounds can this country allow a court to sentence a woman to 18 years in jail, over a murder in which nobody can even be sure whether the victim is dead?! The coroner even stated that though he was 'comfortably satisfied' that the child was dead, (what does that even entail, being 'comfortably satisfied' that someone is dead, without a body?) there was still a possibility that she was alive somewhere.

The prosecution rested on the fact that Keli Lane lied about what she had done with the baby. Apparently, she had initially said she had given the baby up to a couple in Perth. Alright, so she lied about that, for any number of reasons.

She then said she had given the baby to its natural father, an Andrew Morris, who she had a one-night stand with.

Two years later, when questioned again, she said it was Andrew Norris. With an 'N'.

=O

SHOCK HORROR! THE GOT THE NAME OF THE GUY SHE HAD A ONE-NIGHT STAND WITH  WRONG AFTER TWO YEARS. Apparently, this is indicative of her guilt!

Further, apparently, no records of any such 'Andrew Morris' or 'Norris' exist. Because it's really so impossible that he didn't give her his real name. I'm pretty sure I've given people fake names before, and pretended to be 'Lee-Anne' or 'Brittany'.

Is this some sort of elaborate joke that everybody is in on just to mess with me?!

As far as I'm aware... there ends the evidence for her guilt.

....

Is this really all that a court, a jury, needs to ruin somebody's life? A couple of lies, and a media circus intent on horrifying everybody, whether justly or not?

If so, I am frightened to continue living in this country. What happened to 'innocent until proven guilty'? What happened to 'beyond reasonable doubt'?

A woman is convicted for 18 years, for essentially failing to remember a man's name. Really?

  1. That really is messed up. You'd think they'd of at MOST gone with house arrest or something with no solid evidence. It's kind of stupid to just "assume" the kid is dead and "assume" she's lying. Sometimes I have to say an ex's name a few times to make sure I've got it right, and they were all much longer than a one night stand.

    Stupid!

  2. You'll love this new development; A cabbie has come forward saying he saw Keli abandon the kid near a park somewhere, and gave the kid to a lady who said she'd look after it.

The very fact that people can be convicted of murder without a shred of proof of the victim's actual death is ludicrous.
